I am interested in trying to understand and predict how ecosystems may change into the future so that we can mitigate some of the negative effects of human activities. Throughout my work, a key focus has been linking changes in the underlying environment as a result of extreme events such as marine heatwaves with organism physiology, community composition and distribution across a diverse range of species and habitats. The physiology of organisms at the base of the food change such as plankton is closely coupled with a particular suite of environmental conditions, once these conditions change plankton communities respond quickly leading to impacts that can propagate up through the food web to fish and marine predators.

I am also interested in how we can restore ecosystems to make them more resilient to human pressures. Part of my work in Hong Kong focuses on increasing the resilience of ecosystems via the restoration of nearshore habitats such as subtidal oyster reefs and sargassum forests, through work with local and international NGOs.
